ALL ROADS LEAD TO GRUNDARFJORDUR

Welcome to the beautiful West

Grundarfjordur is a village of 900 people, set in a beautiful location by the sea, sheltered by mountains, where Kirkjufell mountain is the best known. At restaurant Bjargarsteinn you will have an unforgettable meal in a stunning setting and a whale watching trip with Laki Tours is a must. We recommend driving around Snaefellsnes peninsula and exploring the Snaefellsjokull glacier national park.

You can go to the Vatnshellir cave and to the summit of the glacier, connecting with both heaven and earth. If you want to hike up there, we recommend GoWest tours. Our favorite café in the area is the small Fjoruhusid, down by the sea at Hellnar. In Rif there is Frystiklefinn, a super cool theatre run by a young local actor. During summer they have great performances in English based on local history.

It´s really worth spending a day in Stykkisholmur, which is the oldest town of Snaefellsnes. There you can find a few museums, and artists´ workshops. Flatey island in Breidafjordur bay is one of our favorite places on the planet. It´s like going 100 years back in time. Check out trips to Flatey with Seatours who also offer some great boat trips.

Dress Code Iceland

The weather in Iceland is actually milder on average than most people think, but can be extremely unpredictable, ranging from sunny to blizzard within minutes! So it is impossible to predict weeks or months in advance, but here are some guidelines on what to pack and how best to dress to get the most out of your Iceland trip.

Staying comfortable: Layering is key
The most important thing is to dress in layers that you can pile on or strip off as needed. It‘s a good idea to bring a small day pack with you, to store extra layers in together with your camera etc. when out exploring.

What to wear on a trip to Iceland in summer (June-August)

  • Base layer
  • Warm sweater
  • Lightweight outdoor trousers/pants
  • Lightweight weatherproof jacket with hood
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Hat, scarf and gloves/mittens

What to wear on a trip to Iceland in winter (September-May)

  • Base layer
  • Warm sweater – wool or fleece
  • Outdoor trousers/pants
  • Warm weather-proof jacket with hood
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves/mittens

And don’t for get the swimwear – and sunglasses for the look!

MEET THE OWNERS

Ásthildur and Jonni

Asthildur is born and raised in a farm near Grundarfjordur. She has a passion for the nature and likes to go hiking, especially on the mountains around her childhood farm and loves to go fishing.

Jonni works as an independent consultant and salmon guide. He has worked as a fisherman on a trawler and boats here in Grundarfjordur. He has passion for music and plays on a guitar in a blues band.

Bjarg was built by Jonni’s great grandparents, so this house has a special place in his heart and many of his relatives was born in it.
